Jewelry Trade Shows in the U.S - 7 Tips to Retailers and Wholesalers

7 tips to a Successful trade show

  • Jewelry Trade Shows are different than most trade shows. Most likely you will buy from domestic and international wholesalers, items of high value such as 18K gold, 14k Gold, Sterling Silver, Famous Branded Gold Plated items, These are expensive commodities and need some carefully prepared discipline, here are 7 tips which might help you to have a successful trade show experience.
  • Preparation: is your best strategy. When you are previously prepared you will have a better result, guaranteed. Make your air travel, car rental, and hotel reservations at least 30 days prior to the event. You will have better seats and better room for the same amount of money. Look for your top 10 categories in gross sales. Write down the styles, sizes, colors, weights, brands and all relevant information you will need. Get an average cost per item of those goods and calculate your investment. Remember, your travel expenses are most likely to be fixed, air travel, hotel, meals, etc, they vary very little. Now that you know how much your travel cost is, plan your purchases, it should be at least 10 times your total expenses, This way it will make your time x investment make sense. It may seem strange, but also, make a list of the items you do not need to buy now. It will same you time and money.

  • Analyze: is a powerful tool for success. If your business is steady or growing or even going down, find out what is the variation compared to previous years and most importantly why. Always think on the positive side, business people need to believe in their business. If the growth is due to a category of products, invest more in that line of product. If it is because you attracting a new group of customers, buy more products for these customer’s likeness. If your sales are down due to the lack of new and trendy items, carefully invest in a small quantity and a larger selection of new products that you know your customers will buy. If your sales are steady, also carefully invest in a small quantity and a larger selection of new products, you know your customers will buy.

  • Planning: When you plan ahead, you also capitalize on opportunities. Use certain dates such as “4th July”, “Presidents day”, “Black Friday”, “Back to School” or create your own “Blue Moon Sales Day” and get rid of old items. My late Father use to tell me, “if you follow in love with you merchandise, you will marry it.” You can just like them, but sell it out as fast as you can. We all have some old items that are selling very slow or not selling at all. Put them up for sale, combine with other new hot item for its cost, or just sell it for cost before you can not sell it at all, get your working capital (or cash) back before that trade show, now you have more money to invest item that are selling fast.

  • Suppliers List: Make a list of your top suppliers, also remember those who contacted you before the show, they contacted you because you are important to them. These suppliers are most likely to offer you better deals than others. Call them in advance make sure what is their booth number and let them know you are going to attend. Smart companies will offer to loyal customers their best products.

  • Shopping List: Make a Shopping List and not to shop list. Start with the most important ones which must be the best sellers and most profitable.

  • Be Open Minded: This is a quality business people must have, try new things, unproven things, things you have a hunch on. The marketplace looks to you for such items because those categories are paying off for you. Only buy what you can sell, unless you are changing your line of business, stay in your line of products. If you sell gold jewelry, don’t buy shoes because it is chip and someone offers you terms. Look for other kinds of jewelry instead, like, silver, or high end gold plated, or even stainless steel jewelry also try different brand of watch. Even you make a mistake “oops!!” put them on sale next month, since it is new, you will get rid of them fast. Most likely, you will do good, or score high. Reserve 25% you’re your purchases to new and hot items. Listen to what people are talking about. Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are good place to start education yourself for what is Hot right now.!!!

  • Be conservative: Set your buying limit and stop there. If you are also buying in terms, remember they also come due and you will have to pay. Only buy what you can sell. Stay away from a completely different line of products than what you usually sell.
