Gold Plated Jewelry is finished with a solid layer or layers of gold, typically constituting a percentage of the item's total weight, deposited to a base of either sterling silver or some other metal base. The related terms "gold plated" also "gold overlay" or just "gold plate" may legally be used in some contexts when the layer or layers of gold constitutes a percentage of real gold content.
Most high quality gold-plated pieces with a good and professional finishing have the same appearance as high carat gold, such as 24k, 18k and 14k, even with daily wear, it can last for years, although the layer or layers of gold will eventually wear off exposing the metal underneath. Serious jewelry manufacturers will place informative stamps on its jewelry pieces such as HGE for "heavy gold electroplate" also 18KGL for 18k gold layered, HGP for "heavy gold plate", neither of which has any legal meaning, but they indicate that the item has gold content.
